IRS AUDIT - WHY USE A PROFESSIONAL?

Next to a root canal, a tax audit may feel like the scariest words in the English language. Even if you have been 100% honest and have taken no risks with borderline deductions, there is just this feeling of dread associated with having an IRS Revenue Agent reviewing your taxes. On the other hand, if you have been pushing the edge of the envelope on allowable deductions, forgot some income or are attempting to avoid taxes through some scheme, there can be serious reasons to fear the audit. Why should you use a professional to represent you at the IRS audit instead of the do-it-yourself method?

First, the IRS has selected your tax return for a reason and you may not know the reason. It is probably not random or just bad luck. Second, what will the IRS agent look for? What is he thinking about you? What does he mean by that comment or question? What does he really know about you? Third, what can I do if the audit does not go well? What if the IRS agent is wrong? What if I owe more than I can possibly pay?

Demetriou, Montano & Associates can answer all of your questions and we have former IRS Revenue Agents to handle IRS audits. Our former IRS agents can figure it all out. They know what the IRS is looking for, but more importantly they know what the IRS will and will not accept as substantiation of your tax return. Former IRS agents know when an IRS agent is being unreasonable or unfair and how to handle that agent. Former IRS agents know what leeway there is for the IRS and when they should take the matter to a manager or higher. What if you have little or no records for the numbers on your tax return? A former IRS Revenue Agent knows how to handle it.

A former IRS Revenue Agent knows if and when it is time to go beyond the agent and manager and take the matter to the IRS Appeals Division. Can we win at the Appeals level and what will the Appeals Officer look for and accept? Our former IRS Revenue Agents have been there and are not afraid to go there again. Tax Court? When is it a good idea, when is it not?

And, if you or your CPA have already started the audit, but it is not going well or is over your head, we can step in and level the playing field.
